What makes a game fun?

I have always been a huge nerd about video games, and since I've always been a weird artist at heart, it gets a special attention from me.

As the normal netizen, I am often found on Xitter fighting people in replies about video games.

I came across a tweet that really got me thinking about what makes a game "fun" and worth playing in my humble opinion.

For the past decade or so we've gotten a new trend of ULTRA REALISTIC games with either: 1- Little to no gameplay elements. Literally just there to flex the engine's capabilities (COUGH, UNREAL ENGINE 5) or 2- The same repetitive gameplay that has no replayability value and ends up looking like a goddamn roblox obby if you ignore the blinding flare from the trendy graphics.

I sincerely resent this generation's games. It's filled with extremely badly optimized games that end up being more than 100GB each. Like are you serious? Why the fuck is Fortnite around 100GB?!?! For that I would download GTA V on my shitty laptop and I would get a better deal.

I sincerely wish that AAA game companies would learn what gamers really want instead of spending so many millions of dollars working on some slop to sell for more than $60 each copy.

Now you may be asking,"Ghost, what the fuck makes a game 'fun'?" Well, my dear reader, from my perspective, a game is fun when it's innovative. A game with good gameplay elements that create a new experience. It could be from the visual aspects, like the art direction from the soundtrack, but also from gameplay elements like the Portal series, that was a HUGE success due to their incredibly stunning and very recognizable style AND the very fun and interactive world filled with puzzles for you to figure out on your own pace. Portal is one of the greatest examples that I have to what is a FUN game. But Lord Gaben could explain it better for me.

It's no secret to anyone who knows me but since this is one of the first times I mention it, I am a huge Valve fanboy. I seriously think that they are one of the greatest game companies in the world. I grew up playing Gmod and have always been extremelly attached to any and all Valve games.

Honestly, if I may mention this as well, one of the greatest examples to stylization that saves a game TO THIS DAY is definitely Team Fortress 2. TF2 has been a very active game since launch. It's a game that is still in the first Source engine (in contrast to Valve's greatest money maker CSGO CS2). And the graphics still remain great to this day and age due to how stylized it is! Such a great game, it's truly a timeless multiplayer that still holds on almost two decades after launch. For some reason, I really hope that Valve never decides to transfer TF2 to Source 2. I genuinely want the game to look the same as it has always been. If TF2 became a more blinding and realistic game due to Source 2 I would personally go out of my way to the Valve headquarters and would hold Gaben hostage until they reverted it (haha it's a joke I swear!) I appreciate the graphics + style of TF2 more than anything. Seeing CS2 after the update genuinely got me so weirded out. I miss CSGO man...

In conclusion, please ignore my train of thought completely going into a different direction, I think a "fun" game isn't just "when a game has a ball or gun in it" but it's actually when they innovate in a way. Originality is not hard to achieve. Everything has influences from other stuff, Half-life was inspired by Doom for example! Every single thing out there is only original because the people working on it were determined to create something with their passion for the craft. I seriously hope that game developers will keep the gamer's opinions in mind for the future. Watching The Game Awards this year and seeing every trailer look the same, (DON'T MENTION E33 WINNING GOTY DON'T MENTION E33 WINNING GOTY) killed my soul a little bit. I hope the AAA game companies see the "Focus, M" memes on Twitter and actually get to work.

The Real Housewives ended up triggering me.

Recently, I've been binge-watching The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City with my beloved. And we are currently on the 4th season as of now.

A TV show with so much stupid drama it hangs between ridiculous and hilarious, but this one new cast member caught my eye. For the worst reason possible.

For some damn reason Monica Garcia and her relationship with her mother brought me to a very dark place. I keep getting reminded of my own mother and how abusive she was and still is to me. Seeing a cast member like Lisa Barlow defend her mother as if she knows a single thing about their relationship was a very hard watch. (and I say this as a Lisa Barlow apologist AND Lisa Barlow BPD truther)

Is it ridiculous or at least a bit embarrassing that I'm being moved by a storyline from the Real Housewives from all places? Yeah a bit. But I seriously can't help it. It's literally like looking at a mirror. Monica's childish reactions and the way she interrupts people is very similar to how I react whenever my mother ends up triggering me.

Seeing my trauma and myself so well represented in such an embarrassing way in a reality show really messed with me, man. Fuck my stupid chud life.
